It’s that time of the year again. All the kids are getting ready for school. You are stressed over school supplies, registration, and car-pooling the whole neighborhood… but have you considered the dangers school can present for your teens? Here are some 2001 survey statistics, taken from grades 9-12, that you should know about:

  • 29 percent of all students reported that someone offered, sold, or gave them an illegal drug on school property in the 12 months prior to the survey. The survey indicated no difference in age limit, ethnic/racial background or economic standing.
  • 17 percent of students reported carrying a weapon such as a gun, knife, or club anywhere in the past 30 days. About 6 percent reported they had carried a weapon on school property. Students in lower grades were generally more likely to have carried a weapon anywhere.
  • 20 percent of students reported that street gangs were present at their schools. Students in urban schools were more likely to report than suburban and rural students. Gangs were more prevalent in public schools than in private schools. No differences were found in students’ reports of gangs irrespective of where their schools were located.
  • 24 percent of students reported using marijuana anywhere during the last 30 days, whereas 5 percent of students reported using marijuana on school property. Student’s grade in school was not associated with marijuana use.

If you are worried about your child, get involved. It is not enough to know where your child’s school is located. Be involved; know their friends, teachers, and coaches. Take the danger out of school.
